On other matters, Ruth F asked the group about expanding geographically to include people who are interested in being involved but live too far away (like Bruce and others) or can’t come to meetings for some other reason. Bruce mentioned he had some weird crosses of what he thinks is zucchini and pumpkin. He has all the seeds from the group's sharing and a bunch of fruit bushes, trees, and perennial plants ordered and hopes to be planting a garden come last freeze.īruce Trescott shared that he would grow something that the group might want some seeds from. He has a dozen more trees to fell then build a garden fence. Terry Spahr shared his blank canvas for a garden that is taking shape. Ruth said she is a little anxious and Syl said that's good because it keeps you attentive! Jeff L said his does not ventilate and gets too hot. She had a green house built so this will be a new chapter for her using it. He said he gets tomatoes earlier and more of them by starting now. He said he starts tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers in mid-March as well in six inch pots. He said he will start broccoli and brussel sprouts mid-March. He used some older seed so he is not confident how many will germinate. Jeff Lubell has onions, shallots and leeks started. He finds this is a good medium for storing them. He said to store the cabbage he harvests them with the roots intact, uses 5 gallon buckets and puts about 3 plants in each with damp shredded leaves around the roots. Stuart commented he just used the last of his leeks from winter storage and he still has one Marner cabbage (from our UVSS seed) left from winter. The onion seeds he planted this year are Clear Dawn and Jaune Paille. He said celeriac takes forever to germinate and last year he had a great yield of it. Stuart Blood said he planted leeks, onions, and celeriac last week. Syl Davatz said she was starting Purple Peacock sprouting broccoli (for a seed crop), leeks, onions, celery, celeriac, and parsley. She’ll be starting onions, leeks, parsley, celery, and some herbs in mid-March. Ruth Fleishman opened up speaking about her early seeding. Unfortunately, he was having trouble with his internet connection. We welcomed Bruce Trescott who was joining for the first time from Charleston, Vermont. This year's Community Catalog update (We should have some separate planning meetings, probably in the fall, for anyone interested in being involved in this project or some variation of it next year) Let's take a look at our " Staple Crops by Category " list as we plan this season's seed Let's think of some ways to involve people who can't come to meetings but want to be involved. Present: Jeff L, Syl D, Stuart B, Ruth R, Bruce T, Terry S (notes), Ruth F (additional notes) Upper Valley Seed Saver Meeting (On Line) March 9, 2023
